We launched a weather balloon back in November and attached some cameras to it, as well as a plastic spaceman with Larry Sprinkle’s face. Hackerspace Charlotte helped design and launch it, and Charlotte Space Exploration helped with the research. Here’s a video that shows the day-of setup and launch at York Middle School in York, South Carolina.
We’re live-recap-tweeting the launch over at @WCNClive today, but for now, here are some early pictures from the on-board cameras. The full story, which features video from 85,000 feet, as well as our skull-bashingly frustrating 3 week search to find the balloon after it landed, airs at 11 p.m. tonight.

And below, two pictures from 11,803 ft, after the balloon crossed over I-77 at Rock Hill:

More (obviously) tonight at 11 p.m. on NBC Charlotte.
